LTMS Bee Club - Getting MORE than the Basics of Honey Bees! (Grades 6-8)
Join Mrs. Perez for a buzz-worthy 8-week honey bee unit where you will learn all about the lives of bees! You'll journey through beekeeping 101, and explore honey bee anatomy, their life cycle, and what their home is like inside of the hive. We will inspect all the parts of a bee hive and frames, handle the hive tools, mix up nectar to supplement a local bee colony, and create pollinator seed balls to spread throughout our community. You'll experience how bees use scents (pheromones) to identify each other and then use your own sense of smell to find your own human colony with your fellow club members! It's super fun and scientific! You'll learn all about pollination and get to taste a variety of delicious honey samples that bees make from different flowers and regions throughout the seasons. We will make beeswax lip balm and honey soap. Best of all, by week 8, you'll know just how adorable you look in a bee suit! Additionally, you’ll be able to educate others, share, and take action about the health of our treasured pollinators. Note: Students will handle and inspect fresh frames of capped honey and pollen, but there are no live bees on the frames.
